Get to Know an FA Council member: Mark Laurel, Mathematics
by Dara, FA Vice President
What made you decide to use FA council as your collegial governance?
Many of the people who are on FA are people that I enjoyed a good working relationship within the past on TREC and other committees around the college. I also had the desire to learn more about our contract and working conditions. FA provided the means to reestablish working relationships and learn more about contract and working conditions on one committee.
In the time you have been on FA council, what's one interesting or important thing you have learned about working conditions?
The use and importance of Memorandums of Understanding (MOU’s). There are often events or overarching policy changes that could require amendments to our mutually agreed upon contract. MOU’s give the Assembly and the District a mechanism to agree upon the implementation of the appropriate working condition modifications that these events or polices present without having to open a formal negotiation. Thus, the working conditions determined by the MOU can be implemented in a timely manner.
In your spare time, what do you like to do for fun?
I like to dine out with family, lift weights, and write papers based on Bible study.
